Electricity Generation

The generation of electricity from landfill gas (LFG) accounts for approximately two-thirds of currently operational landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) projects in the United States. The landfill gas is used as a replacement for natural gas in large internal combustion engines, or used to generate steam to run turbines. The electricity may be used on-site, or sold to the national grid.
By burning this naturally occurring gas onsite, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions while generating electricity from a renewable source that would have otherwise gone to waste. Our Winnebago Energy Center facility in Rockford, Illinois uses this technology successfully today.
