Direct Use
About one-third of today's operational landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) projects directly use LFG to offset the use of another fuel such as natural gas, coal, or fuel oil. This direct use of LFG can be in a wide range of industrial applications and equipment, such as a boiler, dryer, kiln, greenhouse or other thermal applications. It can also be used directly to evaporate leachate.
As in electricity-generating applications, the benefits are double because the use of the alternative fuel both conserves other fuels, and eliminates greenhouse gases before they reach the upper atmosphere.
